Staying Fit for the Holidays

With the Holiday season in full effect, Joan has one mission - keeping the weight off while faced with so much delicious holiday food! It will be a tough task, but we are all sure that Joan will not break.

In November 2010, Joan's Wish to lose 100lbs. began. Brenda writes,
"when I first met Joan in November she could barely walk - she came in on a walker in fact. Last weekend, Joan went dancing with her girlfriends to a rock and roll band. I'd say that's a bit of an improvement, wouldn't you?"

I would say that's an amazing improvement!! Keep up the great work, Joan. Happy Holidays everyone!

Woo Hooooo!

"Woo Hoooo!" was all the subject line read in Brenda Kashuba's email last week. Seeing that; we knew it could only mean good things. Joan has lost an astonishing 45lbs!! Nearly halfway there with no chance of slowing down or turning back now. Joan continues to stay determined to reach that ultimate goal and we cannot wait for her to get there. We are all 110% behind Joan's efforts and continue to support her throughout her entire journey. But Joan isn't the only one who deserves praise. With out the expertise of Brenda Kashuba - Proprietor of 4Ever Fit Personal Training Studio - and her dedication to Joan, none of this would have been possible. All of us at Wish of a Lifetime are truly inspired by these 2 amazing woman and are glad that they have included us in their amazing journey.

An Amazing Birthday Present!

Last Monday Joan celebrated her 74th birthday and received an amazing birthday present. She stepped on the scales and has hit the 41 lbs. mark!!! She is almost half-way there to her overall goal! What a great birthday! Joan and Brenda Kashuba have been hard at work making this Wish come true. Each week is another great accomplishment. Can't believe the dedication these 2 have shown after a minor health setback that hindered Joan's ability to get in the gym. She has bounced back and is feeling great. Keep up the good work Joan!!!
Look at the joy on Joan's face as she reads the scale and sees she is 41 lbs. lighter and almost halfway there! What a great way to celebrate her birthday!

Another Week Another Pound

Joan has been working rigorously all summer long and is shedding pounds like crazy. Total weight loss to date is 39 lbs.!! She is a machine and her determination is an inspiration to all those who know her. She is such a kind, caring person and we are so proud of her. Keep it up Joan! All of us at JBWOL are extremely proud of you and Brenda.

All I can say is WOW!

Joan is down a total of 37 pounds!! And she is also down a total of 26 1/4 inches, which is extremely impressive. The newer, trimmer Joan has been an inspiration to all of those around her. She is moving around easier without her walker! Although she still suffers from joint pain, her mobility has improved exponentially. Joan's dedication to losing the weight has completely transformed her physically as well as emotionally. Her trainer Brenda writes, "The best part of it all is that Joan and I have become forever friends and will always be a part of each other's lives. While I know it was supposed to be 'for one year', I am here for her for life." What an amazing journey these two have embarked on. The sky's the limit for both Brenda and Joan!!

The Pounds Keep Dropping!

It is with great pleasure that I announce Joan's weight loss is up to 32 lbs! She has been hard at work all summer with her trainer Brenda Kashuba and the pounds just keep on dropping!

Joan is looking trim and feeling great! Joan writes, "It seems as though it has been a slow process however everyone tells me that this is the way to do it.. then it will stay OFF!" It may seem slow to Joan, but everyone couldn't be prouder of how far she's come in the last few months. We hope that she continues her training with Brenda and keeps up the hard work. Joan says, "I feel so blessed to have had my Wish of a lifetime answered...and no one could be a better trainer than Brenda." All of us at JBWOL feel the same way and cannot believe the determination Joan has shown in pursuing her weight loss goal!

28 Pounds Lost!

I know it has been a while since our last update, but Joan has continued her fight to get fit. To date, she has lost a staggering 28 pounds! When speaking with her trainer, Brenda Kashuba, she informed me that the weather has been keeping her and Joan from doing their pool aerobics, but that they are finding other ways to keep Joan going. Joan didn't want to send any new photos until she hit the 30 lbs. mark, so stay tuned for some new photographs soon! Keep up the great work Joan!

The Pounds Just Keep Dropping!

Determination, dedication, commitment and consistency is exactly what Joan continues to prove to everyone as she continues to make huge strides in her weight loss goal. As of today, we can proudly say she has now lost a total of 25 lbs and we couldn't be more thrilled for her. Joan and Brenda decided to dare the pool waters for the first time, enjoying some water aerobics under the California sun.
Joan and Brenda are both very delighted and pleased with Joan's accomplishment in her weight loss goal thus far and are even more excited about the lifelong friendship they have made with one another.
We are all ecstatic about Joan's progress and continue to look forward to seeing her accomplishments in the weeks to come!

20 lbs down....

We are extremely excited to report that as of March 31st, Joan has lost an admirable 20 lbs! This exciting news comes just as the weather out in California is beginning to warm-up, and Joan will be able to get back out to the pole walking classes!
Joan has been spending a lot time with the medicine ball, which has helped her to strengthen her core. Not only are these types of exercises a lot of fun, but with the new core strength, Joan has been able to get around much easier.

Joan Riskas' Wish Coming True 12 Pounds at a Time!

Joan's determination to lose weight has begun to catch the attention of many throughout her community. Just last week Joan was featured in an online news article by MercuryNews! (Link: http://www.mercurynews.com/saratoga/ci_17506055?nclick_check=1) The article was a great representation of how Joan's progress has had a positive affect within her community. She continues to work hard everyday and has lost an outstanding 12 pounds to date! Recently, Chiropractor Dr. Blaine Kingsbury of Los Gatos, CA has decided to join Joan's dedicated wish team. To make sure Joan has every tool necessary to lose the weight, Dr. Kingsbury has offered to pick up the tab on any medical services Joan needs that are not covered by Medicare. Through this unbelievably generous pro bono offer, Dr. Kingsbury has already provided Joan with free X-Rays! Please check out Dr. Kingsbury's website at http://www.communitychiro.com/ to learn more about his practice. It seems that Joan's story has touched so many people and it's so amazing how much generosity these people have shown towards Joan and her wish and to that we say Thank You!

It's ALL Good News!

Joan is continuing to work hard to pursue her weight loss goals. For the month of January Joan lost 6 pounds! We couldn't be more proud of Joan and the determination she has shown throughout this entire process. She writes, "things are going well...THIS IS A FULL TIME JOB!" Recently, Joan has begun participating in a pole walking class in her community on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rita from "We've Got Your Back" and her partner Christine showed the ladies the ins and outs of pole walking on Tuesday before they set out on their first walk. "Joan is really jazzed about the class," says her trainer Brenda. Joan can attend these classes with her friends and when asked about the class she responded with, "yesterday was fun. I got a lot of the gals together here and we had a great time." Also, Joan says that walking with poles is much easier on her back, knees, and hips. Joan also plans on a water aerobics regiment in the summer and has begun using ball exercises as a way to train without putting to much stress on her joints. Brenda writes, "we are finding clever ways around her joint problems." These clever ways alleviate pressure on her joints, but still maintain a high level of intensity.

Action photo of Joan doing her new Ball exercises! It may be tough, but Joan's tougher!

Joan and the gals getting ready to go on their first Pole Walking adventure! Joan switched her workout schedule to Mondays and Wednesdays to attend these classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Now that's determination!

Joan's Wish!

On Monday, November 15, 2010 JBWOL staff visited Joan at her home in Mountain View, California as she embarked on her new journey to get fit. In October, Joan turned to Wish of a Lifetime in hopes that we could help her make a life change. Selflessly caring for her late husband who struggled with Alzheimer’s for over 10 years, Joan did not have much time to focus on herself and her health. Now, she is ready to “be pampered with a healthy diet and a personal trainer to lose 100 pounds”.

Touched by her story, JBWOL reached out to Brenda Kashuba, a trainer at 4EverFit Personal Training Studio in Saratoga, California. Brenda immediately fell in love with Joan’s story and her goal to lose 100 pounds because years ago, Brenda had the same goal. Brenda founded 4EverFit after making a lifestyle change and losing over 65lbs. She has maintained her healthy lifestyle for over 10 years, and is now in the business of helping others achieve the same goal. The comfortable, friendly, non-intimidating atmosphere of 4EverFit, whose motto is, “It’s Never Too Late To Get In Shape”, is a perfect place for Joan to accomplish her goals.

Brenda and her nutritionist will be offering their services pro-bono to help guide and coach Joan to achieve her weight loss goals. Tires Unlimited has also donated an exercise bike for Joan’s home so she can continue to get fit outside the studio.

Follow, support and track Joan's progress throughout the next year on this blog!
